Last year, we at Adoreboard ran an insightful study into the emotions celebrities express on Twitter. After crunching the numbers and surveying the scene, we discovered that Harry Styles of 1D fame was the happiest celebrity on Twitter.
Before we came to this conclusion, we sampled the 100 most popular celebrities on Twitter (specifically the celebrities who had the top 100 most followers), scrapped the tweets they published from January to August 2015 and analysed the text inside these tweets for 24 emotions. The analysis of these specific tweets was carried out by our flagship software Toneapi.
A preliminary look at Harry’s tweets showed clearly why he was the happiest celebrity on the planet. In many of his tweets, he would type the phrase, “All the love”. When this phrase was placed into Toneapi, the content score (our proxy happiness value) returned a massive +94. Because the content score varies from -100 to +100, Harry’s consistent phrase was making him hit the maximum level of our happiness score.
Importantly though, this positive happiness value reflects something very important about Harry Styles: He’s Happy. In the vast majority of footage shot on Harry, he’s cracking a cheeky grin. Not only that, his happiness spreads to the people around him. Salient examples include stopping a massive concert for 4 minutes to get a get a fan’s name right for her 7th birthday, through to inspiring the majority of Taylor Swift’s stellar 1989 album, an album which has gone onto become the highest selling album in the USA in 2014.
In this case, his happiness spills over onto his twitter account. Because he is a generally jovial bloke, his tweets will reflect that ecstatic disposition. The same, however, cannot be said for the rugged and edgy Zayn Malik……
